Minor Cannabinoids
Beyond THC and CBD
Cannabis produces over 100 cannabinoids. While THC and CBD get the most attention, several "minor" cannabinoids show promising therapeutic potential.
CBG — The Mother Cannabinoid
Cannabigerol (CBG) is called the "mother cannabinoid" because CBG-A is the precursor from which all other cannabinoids are synthesized. It's typically found in low concentrations (less than 1%) in mature plants.
Research suggests CBG may help with:
- Inflammation (potentially more effective than CBD)
- Glaucoma (reduces intraocular pressure)
- Bacterial infections (antibacterial properties)
- Appetite stimulation
CBN — The Sleepy Cannabinoid
Cannabinol (CBN) forms when THC degrades over time through exposure to heat and oxygen. Aged cannabis tends to have higher CBN levels.
CBN is associated with:
- Sedation and sleep aid
- Pain relief
- Anti-inflammatory effects
- Appetite stimulation
CBC — The Mood Helper
Cannabichromene (CBC) is one of the most abundant cannabinoids but gets little attention. It doesn't bind well to CB1 receptors, so it's not psychoactive.
CBC may help with:
- Depression (appears to work with anandamide)
- Pain and inflammation
- Neurogenesis (brain cell growth)
THC-V — The Diet Cannabinoid
Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THC-V) is mildly psychoactive at high doses. At low doses, it actually blocks CB1 receptors.
THC-V is notable for:
- Appetite suppression (opposite of THC)
- Energy and alertness
- Shorter-lasting effects than THC
- Potential blood sugar regulation
