Start Low, Go Slow
The Golden Rule
"Start low, go slow" is the most important advice for cannabis consumers, especially beginners. This means starting with a small dose and gradually increasing until you find what works for you.
Why It Matters
Cannabis affects everyone differently based on:
- Body weight and metabolism
- Endocannabinoid system differences
- Tolerance level
- Whether you've eaten recently
- Other medications
Taking too much can lead to uncomfortable experiences like anxiety, paranoia, dizziness, or nausea. While not physically dangerous, overconsumption is unpleasant and avoidable.
Dosing by Method
Smoking/Vaping: Take one small puff. Wait 10-15 minutes before taking another. Effects peak within 30 minutes.
Edibles: Start with 2.5-5mg THC. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. Many beginners make the mistake of re-dosing too soon because they "don't feel anything yet."
Tinctures: Start with 5-10mg under the tongue. Wait 30-45 minutes to gauge effects.
Finding Your Sweet Spot
Keep a journal of your experiences:
- Product name and THC/CBD levels
- Dose amount and method
- Time of onset and duration
- Effects experienced (positive and negative)
- Overall rating
Over time, patterns will emerge that help you find your ideal dose.
If You've Taken Too Much
If you've overconsummed, remember:
- Nobody has ever died from a cannabis overdose
- Find a calm, comfortable space
- Drink water and eat light snacks
- CBD may help counteract THC's effects
- Black pepper (containing caryophyllene) may also help
- Effects will pass — typically within a few hours
